I really enjoy every aspect of running. I appreciate the feeling of my muscles working. I enjoy the rhythmic sound of my breathing and foot steps. I take joy in the sound of my feet on the pavement, the sound crunching on gravel, the soft sound on dirt or sand or the crunchy sound on leaves. I love listening to the sound of the wind in the trees. I delight in the feel the sun beating down, and the heavy feel of the humidity. I love the feeling of running in the rain, especially barefoot. I enjoy the sensation of sweat pouring down, the feel of salt when it dries, the feeling after a shower when all of the sweat is gone and my face is finally dry. I love the realization that I ran a mile or two and didn't even notice. I appreciate that running helps keep me fit. I love running enough that if it made me gain weight, I would still run.
I probably could be better than mediocre but I love running too much to make it not fun. I enjoy pushing myself, but not so much that it makes it unenjoyable. In fact, I never hit the wall in my 50k race. I probably could have run faster but it wouldn't have been as fun. I think that is why I love running long. You don't have to go as fast. I wouldn't have been able to experience the woods, the cold air, the feeling of floating along the ground gracefully (that’s how I feel, I'm not sure that's how I looked).
